Audition Process

Application

Candidates who wish to register for the GMJO auditions are obliged to

  • Meet the requirements of the conditions of participation
  • Register in one of the audition cities; the choice is completely free
  • Confirm the participation at a later date under the personal audition account

The application deadline is usually 7-10 days before the first audition date at the preferred audition city.

In general, auditions for all instruments take place in all audition cities. Exceptions are percussion (only Amsterdam, Berlin, Vienna, Zurich) and piano/celesta (no live auditions).

If the audition is also to be completed on an additional instrument (e.g. piccolo, bass clarinet, cor anglais), this option needs to be selected when registering, so that more time can be scheduled for the audition. If the additional instrument is not properly registered, the audition on the additional instrument can unfortunately not be accepted.

Further organisational information can be found in the audition account after successful registration.

Reconfirmation

Registration for the auditions does not automatically guarantee an audition slot. The participation must be reconfirmed at a later date via the personal audition account. Only after successful reconfirmation on the respective reconfirmation day the individual audition slot can be selected.

The audition slots are limited and we advise all participants to reconfirm their registration as early as possible on the reconfirmation day.

Audition and Repertoire

The following must be prepared for the audition:

  • The first movement of one of the specified concertos, without cadenza
  • Orchestral excerpts

The list of possible concertos as well as the scores of the orchestral excerpts can be downloaded after submitting the application.

Candidates who wish to take the audition with piano accompaniment may bring a self-organised piano accompaniment to the audition – this however is not obligatory and will not affect the result. A piano is available at each audition location.

All auditions will be recorded by a member of the jury or a staff-member of the GMJO. Each candidate agrees to this when registering for the auditions.

Piano/Celesta: No live auditions will be held. Interested musicians with orchestral experience are asked to contact the GMJO office and send a CV including a demo CD or WeTransfer link to the GMJO office afterwards (Contact: auditions@gmjo.at).

Cancellation

Cancellations must be communicated to the GMJO immediately so that the audition slot can be passed on to other applicants.

Cancellation of the audition can be made via the personal audition account or by e-mail.

Unexcused absence will automatically result in exclusion from the next year’s auditions.

Result

All applicants will be informed in writing of the outcome of their audition in February 2025.

The result represents the final decision of the jury. Legal recourse is excluded.
