Before the Audition
I hold a European nationality, but not from a country belonging to the European Union. Can I apply?
Yes, young musicians from every European country (in the sense of geographical borders) are eligible.
I study in a European country, but do not hold a European nationality. Can I still apply to the GMJO?
No, unfortunately only musicians with European citizenship can join the GMJO.
I do not live in any of the cities visited by the GMJO Auditions, can I audition via CD/DVD?
No, only live auditions are accepted. The GMJO tries to organise auditions in as many cities as possible and to cover all regions in order to enable musicians from all over Europe to take part.
Do I have to audition in the city where I study or in my home country?
No, the audition can be completed in any available audition city.
Is there a fee to take part in the auditions?
No, participation in the auditions as well as in the GMJO projects is free of charge.
Does the GMJO cover my costs of travel/accommodation for the audition?
No. The GMJO tries to organise auditions in as many cities as possible and to cover all regions in order to enable musicians from all over Europe to participate and to keep their financial expenses as low as possible.
I am not sure I have the adequate level to audition for the GMJO. Should I do it anyway?
The auditions for the GMJO are highly competitive, so interested musicians should only audition if they are at an advanced level of training and already have orchestral experience. If in doubt, we recommend consulting with the respective main professor.
I am older/younger than the age limit by only a few months, can I still take part in the GMJO Auditions?
No, unfortunately not.
I would like to audition but am not sure if I will be able to take part in all the projects. Is this a problem?
The requirement for the audition is the availability for all GMJO projects in the upcoming year. We understand, of course, that some changes in the schedule are unpredictable and exceptional situations may arise.
Should there be any changes to the personal availability, we kindly ask to inform the GMJO office immediately.
I play the Piano and would like to audition for the GMJO. Is this possible?
Yes, but no live auditions will be held. Interested piano/celesta players with orchestral experience are asked to contact the GMJO office (e-mail: auditions@gmjo.at) and send a CV with a demo CD or WeTransfer link to the GMJO office afterwards.
I also would like to audition on an additional instrument, can I do so?
Yes, this is possible. If the audition is also to be completed with an additional instrument (e.g. piccolo, bass clarinet, cor anglais etc.), the corresponding option must be selected when registering so that more time can be scheduled for the audition. If there are any changes after registration and the audition should take place without the additional instrument, please contact the GMJO office immediately via auditions@gmjo.at.
Does the GMJO provide the orchestral excerpts for the auditions?
Yes, the orchestral excerpts can be downloaded after successful registration in the personal user account. Please note that these scores are exclusively for use in GMJO auditions and are not allowed to be passed on to third parties.
I have registered successfully. When will I be attributed an audition slot?
Registration for the auditions does not automatically guarantee an audition slot. The participation must be reconfirmed at a later date via the personal audition account. Only after successful reconfirmation on the respective reconfirmation day the individual audition slot can be selected. The audition slots are limited and we advise all participants to reconfirm their registration as early as possible on the reconfirmation day.
Why do I have to reconfirm my audition?
Unfortunately, in some cities more musicians register for the auditions than there are audition slots available. To make sure that all interested candidates still wish to take part, please confirm your participation.
Participation must be reconfirmed in the personal audition account on the date specified there.
I was attributed an audition slot, but I will not be able to take part. What should I do?
Cancellations must be communicated to the GMJO immediately so that the audition slot can be passed on to another applicant. Cancellation of the audition can be made via the personal audition account or by e-mail to auditions@gmjo.at.
Unexcused absence will automatically result in exclusion from the next year’s auditions.
I was attributed an audition slot, but I cannot be present at that time. Is it possible to change?
Yes, we try to fulfil all change requests and ask in such cases to contact us directly by e-mail (auditions@gmjo.at) with the respective availabilities.
The Day of the Audition
Are there warm-up rooms at the audition locations?
Yes, there is always a certain number of warm-up rooms available, but the GMJO cannot guarantee the permanent availability for all audition candidates.
When should I arrive at my audition location?
We recommend arriving at the audition venue approx. 45-60 minutes before the audition time.
How long does each audition take?
Approx. 10-15 minutes, the individual duration depends on the repertoire and the chosen instrument.
Will I be asked to play all the orchestral excerpts?
The required orchestral excerpts will be announced on site during the audition by the jury member or GMJO team member present.
Will I be expected to take a sight-reading test during my audition?
Generally not, but there may be exceptions if the jury member present so decides.
Percussionists will be asked to sight-read a passage during the audition.
Is there a piano at the audition locations?
Yes, a piano is available at every location, should auditioners decide to bring a self-organised piano accompaniment for the audition. However, this is not mandatory and will not affect the result. The GMJO does not provide piano accompaniment for the auditions.
Is there a harp at the auditions locations?
The GMJO does not automatically provide a harp for the auditions, as most candidates prefer to audition on their own instrument or on a harp belonging to the conservatory that they have organised themselves. If candidates need help organising a harp from the conservatory, the GMJO office needs to be contacted at least 2 weeks before the audition date (auditions@gmjo.at).
Except for the jury/staff member(s), will there be anyone else listening to my audition?
No. GMJO Auditions are not open to the public. Only authorised persons are allowed in the audition room.
Can my teacher listen to my audition?
No, the GMJO auditions are not open to the public.
Why are the auditions filmed/recorded?
As the GMJO auditions take place in around thirty European cities, it is not possible for the jury members to be present in person at all audition venues. The evaluation of the auditions is based on the audition recordings, as this is the only way to ensure a fair decision-making process.
Can I refuse to have my audition filmed/recorded?
No. By registering for the auditions, each candidate agrees to their audition being recorded.
Can I access the recording of my audition afterwards?
No. The audition recordings are only used to evaluate the qualification of the participating candidates and can therefore not be handed over.
After the Audition
When will the results of the auditions be known?
The results will be published via the personal user accounts after the end of the auditions by February 2025.
I received the audition results and was placed on the Reserve List. What does this mean? Will I be invited for the tours?
Musicians who are placed on the reserve list after the audition evaluation belong to the small circle that fulfil the strict criteria for admission to the orchestra, but cannot be considered for the tour projects at this point due to the instrumentation. Unfortunately, it is not easy to predict when and how often the reserve list will be used. However, experience shows that more musicians are invited from the reserve list than one might expect. The order of the reserve list is determined exclusively by the jury members.
Being placed on the Reserve List means that I am now a GMJO member?
No, only those musicians who actually take part in the GMJO projects are defined as GMJO members.
I do not understand why I was not accepted. Can I appeal to the Jury or ask for feedback?
The decision of the jury is the final decision. Legal action is excluded. Unfortunately, due to the high number of candidates (approx. 2500 applications per year), it is not possible for the jury to provide feedback on the individual auditions.
If I receive a confirmation from the orchestra, does the invitation automatically apply to all GMJO projects of the year?
Some musicians are invited to all projects in a year, others only to individual projects. The reason for this is the repertoire and the different instrumentation of the projects, as well as the rotation of members, which we regard as positive.
If accepted in the orchestra, will I be a permanent member of the GMJO?
No. Apart from the position of concertmaster, all musicians must audition every year in order to be invited to participate in the following year’s projects.
